THE FARM
The Fontenai farm is situated at an altitude of 1826 meters above sea level, which is considerable even by South Tyrolean standards. High above the natural Matscher Valley, which has been part of the “Bergsteiger Dörfer” group since 2017, the family lives and works with effort and enthusiasm on the mountain farm. Late meadows at 2000 meters above sea level with their own alpine hut on Eisa, derived from the Celtic deity Eisa, are among the farm’s gems. The family loves to spend time there.

Three generations
A family business that impresses
The farm has been an organic hay milk farm since 2009
the young generation has been at work since 2021
Senior farmer Sepp is the all-rounder on the farm and also the advisor for all hikes and summits. His wife Edith knows all about herbs and their healing effects additionally she is also a passionate wool felter. Engelbert is the young farmer and maker on the farm. He lends a hand everywhere and, as a trained carpenter, he has worked on the holiday apartments. His wife Esther is responsible for looking after the guests and product refinement and always keeps the peace. All four share the task of keeping an eye on the two whirlwinds Noah and Jan.

Calves mooing from the barn, a cat sneaking across the yard, chickens clucking as they peck at the grass, the smell of fresh hay and mountains wherever you look. As idyllic as this sounds, it is also a lot of work: mowing, bringing in hay, milking, mucking out, feeding the animals, working in the garden – the days are long on the organic farm.
If it’s important to you to get a genuine view of the work on a mountain farm, then Fonanai Farm is the place for you. Here, families can still find out how the jam gets into the jar, the milk into the yogurt, and the bread onto the table.

For you and your favorite days of the year, there is a barbecue area and an outdoor sauna on the large, sunny lawn. There is a playground for the children to run around and have fun. A holiday on the farm is uncomplicated, close to nature, and sustainable.
The private alpine hut above the farm in the middle of the late meadows can also be used by guests: for barbecues, relaxing, and enjoying the amazing view. Up here you even feel closer to the many peaks of the valley.
